« on: 13 September 2002, 00:03 »
it looks like i have no more excuses for keeping that windows box lying around... maya4.5 will be released for osX on september 23..and compared to 3d studio max5, (which i like) the price is right.
maya comlete= $2,000
3d max5= $6,000 (i think)
......happy......
i havent powered up that winblows machine in over a week.
maya complete 4.5

Why don't they make AutoCad for MacOS!?

It is the best 3D design app... and it is only for Windoze! How stupid is that?

I should check out Maya, the price is better then AutoCad

Yeah! They should make AutoCad for Linux too! Then I wouldn't have to use any M$ products at work either!

Autocad does rule.

If discreet and autodesk made software for mac (besides combustion or the other video applications) or linux, i could finnaly be rid of windows. I have talked to the bosses also, they like the idea of not using windows. So only one more step to freedom at work!!
i havent heard about linuxcad, if it is as customizable as autocad (like lisp routines, etc..) then i might be able to convince them its a better solution...

Sure, and I did look into it. It just isn't AutoCad.  Autodesk has made a product which is actually fun, and easy to use. Plus, it is what I was hired to work with.

Hmmm $2000 for maya complete..

Alias|Wavefront must be cool to make mac and linux versions of maya, but I think I'll support Blender instead which is going to now be under the GPL.  I've seen some very nice models made in blender.

i had the chance to use vectorworks and wasnt impressed with it. If i were going to go the parametric "building model" route, i would take archicad ovr any other package, Well, maybe revit (whcih was acquired by autodesk last spring). Revit just isnt made for mac/linux. Form-Z i hear is a well-rounded modeler, most users are ex-3dstudio viz users. Maya is more aimed at high-end animations/models, like video game development or movie effects and movies..i think it would be a waste of money to buy maya for cad/modeling.
Is blender a cad modeler, or is it a full-blown animation package like 3d studio max or maya??

not that im aware of. If it is, i can be rid of windows forever. I dont need autocad at home anymore, so the only program i use in windows is 3D Studio Max.

Not much of a 3D, CAD person, but I know if you want to do this on macs, you go here:
