AHH! Finder is toast!

Holding down the shift key doesn't disable extensions because there are none in OS X. There are kernel extensions, but they're kinda different. Holding down the shift key will disable any login items.

You might try opening a terminal window.
sudo rm -fr ~/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

Logout and login

That might work. It's basically trashing the finder prefs, like people used to do in OS 9.

I missunderstood, I thought he was having the issue under OS9, not X.

I assumed he was using X (his username version tipped me off) and I got lucky. It was pretty much 50/50   ;)
