$500 Mac

You have probably heard about the rumors of a headless Mac, and it turns out they were true. Starting at $500, you can now get the most affordable Mac ever. Does not come with a monitor or keyboard, but wow I want one.

Also, be sure to check out the new iPod shuffle and iWork.

With some tweaks, you can safely tune Mac Mini into an iHome

BTW, here's a setup I put together at the Apple Store (hard to get through to; lots of timeouts).

...and with full options, it's about HALF what my parents paid for a Performa 6220CD when *that* was new.

Interesting.

The base model:

http://www.apple.com/macmini/specs.html

Processor     1.25GHz PowerPC G4

Memory    256MB of PC2700 (333MHz) DDR SRAM

Graphics    ATI Radeon 9200 with 32MB of DDR SDRAM with AGP 4X support

Hard drive1    40GB Ultra ATA1    80GB Ultra ATA1

Optical drive    Slot-loading Combo Drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)

Ports    One FireWire 400 port; two USB 2.0 ports; DVI output; VGA output (adapter included)
Networking    Built-in 10/100BASE-T Ethernet and 56K V.92 modem3

Plus you get OSX 10.3 and Appleworks.

I wonder how they got the price down so low.... what would a comparable Linux x86 box go for?

Maybe getting rid of a display, keyboard, mouse, and case materials.

Can anyone reccomend a decent, and really cheap, monitor I could get for my Mac mini? It would be nice to get a display from Apple, but at $999, that is more than the cost of the computer I want to get.

Hmmmm

Yeah, Macs are still more expensive than their pc counterparts (and they will probably always be), but Mac OS X makes up for that any day. Not your thing? Then go ahead and get your cheap dell computer and load up on Linux. I am just saying you should give it a try and see if you like the Mac world.

I'm thinking my next PartyPoker cashout's going to be going towards one of these. I'm getting tired of having two active boxes set up... the Celeron 1.7ghz box with Win98 is annoying, but the 66mhz PowerMac needs to go.

It's just a shame my old ADB mouse and keyboard won't work with this, I've grown to love the feel of those old things.

Is this your keyboard? (bottom)

Have used it, and admire it.  Great feel.  Such a shame that Apple pulled ADB out so quickly.  :(

Still, I like my sig's keyboard better.  ;)
