iBook questions

i got a new (used) ibook. its 300mhz, 194ram (somewhere around there). my question is about the display. the max is 800x600. am i stuck with that, or is there some way to get it to support at least 1024x768?? i am running jaguar 10.2.2 on it.

What's your video card? ...

err... no... go to system prefrences, displays. And see where it has a check box saying "show recomended modes". Unclick that and see what other options it gives you.

the LCD panel on the clamshell iBooks is 800x600, no higher.

Here's a trick, though...

In the Finder, set global view options to 32x32 icons, 10pt text, labels on right, keep arranged by name. Set the dektop for 32x32 or 40x40 icons with 10pt text. Shrink the Dock considerably and set it to maximum magnification.

Then, switch to 1000s of colors, as it speeds the old Rage video up quite a bit. Switch dock animation to scale, and set font smoothing to light. these will all help overall performance.

stuff of that vintage still runs well with Jag, as it added accelerated video, but on an 800x600 screen, you're more constrained by resolution than by performance.

thanks. thats cool. the size isnt a problem until i open a program like dreamweaver. so i just wont use dreamweaver on the ibook    ill just start using mozillas html editor or something. anyways, thanks again.

I'm thinking of getting an iBook sometime down the road, but I realized I don't know much about them. How powerful are they? What were they really designed for? For word processing I will probably keep lugging my Centris 610 around. What else are iBooks good for?

on my little 300mhz ibook, i have been able to run apps like photoshop, and flash. not a problem. of course, if the file gets really big, then it will be a problem. mostly, it is for me to show clients my work a little easier. instead of just print-outs, i can show them how their demo is going to work, or how their animation looks. it would be nice to have a faster, more powerful laptop, but for now its working. i guess it is a test. if i actually use the ibook, and it becomes somewhat of a neccesity, i will consider upgrading and getting a powerbook.

How much GB of space do iBooks have?

mine has a 5.5gig drive. it is a little small, but if you have the patience, and like to take things apart, you can put a new one in. they make 40gig drives that are small enough to fit in the ibook. i think the newer ibooks all have at least 20gig drives.

I've upgraded my PowerBook G3 Wallstreet to 20 GB and my iBook SE 2nd ed. to 30 GB. Upgrading the Wallstreet was SO much easier...I didn't have to take the whole damn thing apart.

On the plus side, everything is MUCH faster. Programs and files FLY open in comparision to before the upgrades. RAM helps a lot too.

Hehehe, saw an old blueberry ibook on ebay being sold for $15, one person had made a bid for $7, then I came back today and the price had been changed to $300 or something. haha, what a horrible mistake to make. What if someone had met the fifteen bucks and gotten it? And what kind of idiot bids $7 when they could have met it with 15?

i got mine off of ebay. i was talking to the seller, trying to make a deal, and he was willing to take it off of ebay and sell it to me for 500, but someone bid and he couldnt do that anymore. i ended up winning though    i paid 800. still the best deal i could find.

800 for an ibook?? it must have been pretty new, judging by the ibook prices ive seen on ebay.

it was pretty new, it had never been used. the guy bought it, but never had a use for it. it just sat in his office. it was the best deal i found at the time. though, now i wish i would have held out and bought a brand new one for $1000. the book is in perfect condition, which is very nice. there was one mark on it, and i washed it off
