I don't know how many of you like the concept of a 3D desktop, but I'm going to post this anyways. 3DOSX is a 3D desktop/file browser for OSX. It looks pretty nice if you ask me.

I was thinking of something like that few weeks ago. A full blown 3d Desktop. So full blown that you would need 3d glasses like Elsa to view it.
Yeah

I tried that when it came out. Very novel idea, but "not quite ready for prime time."

Wow, that was terrible...

It looks nice but sadly they made the Win32 design choice of "clunky" versus the Apple design choice of "elegant".

Agreed. Wheras their idea kicks ass, their implementation is... not so good. The platter idea... eh. It can't display a large amount of items very easily. You're really constrained to looking at about three objects at once. The platter doesn't *fill* the viewport, leaving a large amount of white space on either side of it. Space that could be used to show more icons.

Moving between open folders is a chore. You can't have two folders open next to each other and easily drag things between them.

They changed the concept of the "desktop". Honestly, the desktop is the best UI concept ever and it's a mistake to move away from it. Even if you use a 3D filesystem browser, keep the desktop as being just that... a desktop.

Honestly, the metaphor they used feels... wierd. I like it, but I can't use it long because I suffer from agoraphobia, and using it makes me feel like I'm in an infinitely large space, not knowing what's behind me, or in the distance around me. The "pool walls" seem to be incomprehensibly large and distant. Other themes help, but I still feel uneasy using it. Just a personal thing.

3D UIs will get here, but I don't think they're going to be as extreme as that. Applying current UI concepts into a 3D-enabled space, yeah, that would work better.
