powerbook past its prime

i happen to have a powerbook 1400 with a g3 233mhz processor, the only problem with it is that i need to connect to my network and have tried several pcmcia cards to no luck it tells me that i don't have the software for the card and asks whether i want to eject it or not, about how much would it cost to buy a pcmcia card that would work or to buy an internal adapter and where do you think that i could buy one (i have already checked out ebay), i need it for setiathome and to learn more about mac os 9.1, i wish it could run mac osx, i know more about *nix then mac os so i even tried a different OS on it

well, you can run osx on a g3, but this was origianly a 603e. the guy i got it from put a sonnet g3 card in it, on apples site it said that only up to mac os 9.1 is compatible with it, i even tried to install 9.2 but it told me that it is not compatible with that model of powerbook. ill also go find out which pcmcia card  i tried to use in it, i don't have them all sitting in front of me right now,

This model does not. It's from around 1996. Back then, onboard eth0 wasn't a big deal.

As for your cards, you might want to check the manufacturer page to see if they've released a Mac driver. If not, write angry letters and post the addys here so we can write to them.

the card is a etherlink 3, model name 3c589d-tp, there is no info on 3coms website about it other then windows(CE) cement edition support, i could only find drivers for members of the terrible wintel family of computers and the only other card i have is from xircom, and well, the company that made x86 infamous owns them so, no luck on it, i guess i am just going to have to spend another 50 bucks on this thing

EDIT:

One more thing, why not get an airport card? I don't know if an older laptop can use one, but they are real snazy! You can do all your LAN, Ethernet, even dialup, thrugh the Airport. At least that is my understanding.

One last thing, are you sure you can't run OSX on your laptop? My understanding is that the latest version fixed alot of the Laptop issues with the old model G3's. You may want to look into that, also, Mandrake and YellowDog are good Linux distro's if you want a pure *NIX environment.

The Farallon 802.11b PCMCIA cards work great with all PCMCIA model powerbooks, I understand. Might be worth your time to take a trip to their webpage, they make great network kit.

would anyone be interested in buying the damned thing off of me, maybe like a mac hacker or so. it is a powerbook 1400cs with a 233 mhz g3 upgrade card. i don't have the drivers to enable the l2 chache under os9.1/*or any macos*/ it has 48 megs of ram. and i think a passive matrix lcd, i think. the front of the cdrom drive is off, and the little part in the back that covers the wires going to the lcd is gone, it would not fit when i had the replace the old lcd in it. some were there are pictures if you want.
