Apple Updates iBook with G4 CPU
« on: 25 October 2003, 00:59 »
The Register, 10.22.2003:
quote:
Apple has at long last upgraded its iBook family to the G4 processor, ending months of speculation that new G3-class processors from IBM - the PowerPC 750GX - would continue to drive the consumer-oriented notebook line.

As before, two models are on offer, one with a 12in screen, the other with a 14in display. The 12in version contains an 800MHz G4 with 256KB of on-die L2 cache, so its a Motorola MPC7455 chip. The machine includes 256MB of 266MHz DDR SDRAM - another major architectural upgrade - and ships with a 30GB hard drive.

it's good that the iBook now supports AltiVec, but using the G4 was stupid.

IBM has G3s with AltiVec enabled that can match and beat G4s at the same clock... why Apple won't use those is a mystery to me.

NO IT'S NOT! marketers run the company!

"we've been pushing the G4 for years now"
"yeah, I know, but IBM has G3s that can match it"
"oh yeah? we've been wanting to really update the iBooks"
"I know! I thought these would be perfect! They support AltiVec, high-speed busses, and even have some tricks up their sleeves that the G4s DON'T!"
"Wow!! What else?"
"Well, like all G3s, they use much less power, and run so much cooler. They're PERFECT FOR NOTEBOOKS!"
"Great! Let's put the G4 on the new iBook so it can suck the battery down and run so hot that the iBook wears out in less than five years!"
"I love that idea!"

IBM: "Hey... when are y'all gonna get these things we made?"
Go the fuck ~
