Porting Linux Games
« on: 3 September 2004, 15:08 »
I really want to get this online game client. I have no idea about the command line and have never typed a single letter into the terminal. How do I port this game? Keep in mind I have a very limited understanding of UNIX.

Thnks   :D

Step 1:
Tell us what game you want to port
Step 2:
Install Apple X11, if you have not already done so
Step 3:
Install fink and see if the game you want is on there - if so, then things will be simple for you
Step 4:
Open up the terminal and look around.  You won't be able to cause any permanent damage, so feel free to type things and see what happens
Step 5:
Go to a bookstore or a search engine and find yourself a beginner's guide to *nix commands, and read

If the game is not installed by this time, I will walk you through the process.

Well of course, since rm isn't dangerous at all.   :D

Well, there is that.  But more than likely, a newb doesn't have enough permissions to do anything serious.  Gaining root access to a Mac actually requires creating a root account, which is kinda difficult to do.  He's lucky if he has read access in most directories.

I'm still waiting for the activation e-mail   :(

Also, RuneScape works just fine on Linux, after you've installed JavaVM.

The *nix client seems to be really ancient, but I downloaded it anyway, and I'll take a look.  I can tell you right now that your Mac does not have Tk (but it should have Tcl).  Start by going to fink and getting the latest/greatest versions of both Tcl and Tk.  I might have more instructions for you later, but that will be a good start.

Edit - not the latest or greatest versions.  It stupidly requires v8.3 only.  So find 8.3.

What are you talking about?  Thats easy!  Just boot off of a mac install disk and activate the root acount.  It is so easy.  You can also change the root password without knowing the old one, unless of course someone turned that option off.

Actually, it's easier. If you use sudo to run a command as root (administrator in the terminal I would think), it gives you a warning about the dangers and prompts for you to activate it. Hey, has anyone tried using single-user mode with OS X? Just hold down COMMAND-S during startup.

http://www.tcl.tk/software/tcltk/downloadnow83.html

I assume you don't want to compile from source?
FYI, a google search for 'tcltk 8.3' gave this result within 2 clicks.
