AbiWord in OSX
« on: 4 October 2002, 04:03 »
Guys I need your help with this one. I downloaded AbiWord for OSX a while ago. It comes as a *.dmg.gz file which I unzipped and installed. Everything was going fine until I tried to open XAbiWord. To my disappointment nothing happened  :(  . All I got was the XAbiWord menu on the menu bar. I tried to open several documents (*.doc) but nothing would open, not even a new file.

Has anyone had a similar problem or is running AbiWord in OSX? I don't think it's a corrupted download otherwise it wouldn't mount the image disk.

Anyone? Thanks in advance

Did you install and start an X11 server?  Even though OSX is unix, it doesn't run X-Windows-based programs by itself.

You may find this link useful for setting up XF86

Thanks guys. i'm still trying to get the grip on things here, so pls forgive any stupid noob questions    . I followed the link and apparently I'm presented with two options. Either download a binary package or the source code. Which one do you suggest? If I decide to download the binaries, which version do I have to download?

I would take the latest pre-compiled binary. I don't know much about compilling and the thought of doing a gcc makes my skin crawl

Anyway, the binarys work just fine.

These are easy to install packadges. That XFree stuff is a headache and only good if you decide to get a packadge mannager like Fink.

This page has the pre-compiled XFree binarys in an easy to use installer.

Have fun!
