Get a tower, plain and simple. There is no such thing as a Mac for beginners, they are all easy to use, you will love it and keepo it for ever. I guarantee it
Someone was posting a site that was selling a dual 500G4 tower. That's my suggestion, don't go bellow that spec, you will have a kick ass machine. It will last a long time, be upgradable, and just plain kick ass.
Scour eBay, uBid, MacMall, and Outpost who usually have deals on older models.
You will be spending maybe $1,200. If you want to go cheeper than that, get one of the hi-end G3 towers. I think they went as high as 600Mhz. Thir cool and upgradable too.
So thr ya go.
I would stay clear of iMac's. I like them alright, but I'll never go back. The screen is too small and it's too enclosed for someone like me who needs big screen's massive amounts of RAM etc.
Cool thing about a tower is even if you don't need those things now, you allways have the option in the future.
That's my take.
