LCD Question

My family is starting to move away from CRT's and into LCD's.  I wanted to know if the backlight in LCD's is more designed for being on a lot or turning off and on a lot.  One of our current LCD's backlight went out, it was still under warranty, so we got a new one free.  We had it set to turn off every 10 minutes.  One year seems like a short life span, do u think we got a dud or the turning on and off of the backlight ruined it.  I want to know this because on my iBook it would be much more expesnive to replace the backlight so I don't want to ruin it.
