Netscape is running sloooooow
« on: 16 July 2002, 22:31 »
Ok i am running
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en-US; rv:0.9.4.1) Gecko/20020508 Netscape6/6.2.3

It is really slow opening and also opening a new window. It will also Hang for no reason that i can see.

If no-one knows why this is happening can someone point me to a browser that i could use that is able to do everything including getting onto Yahoo Chat, I have Omniweb but it is unable to get onto Yahoo Chat. I will not use IE as it stuffs my system up, it continually crashed, and i had to upload updates for it every 10 days or so, plus it can't get into yahoo chat.

is it a memory problem? the mac version seems most prone to that.

Also, are you running the latest version of mozilla? it's 1.1 BUT the latest is not the most stable (mozilla is the only browser for which this is the case to my knowledge (discounting IE as a browser))

get the latest stable version of 1.0 for your mac.

just my two pence...

Mozilla is the best. I can think of a few things that can cause this issue.

If you have Netscape installed, or have had it installed Mozilla dosn't seem to gel very well when both these browsers are on the comp. It tries to share the Netscape files but fails misserably.

Choose one or the other.

Do a search for all Netscape stuff and dump it. Then do a clean re-install.

What is you processor speed and or connection speed? I have been running mozilla on a 333Mhz G3 and while redraw (it uses Java heavely for this) can be slugish, the actual browsing is speedy. Im on DSL and have no experience with Mozilla thrugh dialup.

You may want to download one of Mozilla's nightly builds.

Fire.app and Proteous are good multi-chat clients.

let me know.

ok I have A 350 Mhz G4 with 128 Mb RAM

Actual browsing with it is very fast, its just opening a new window (10 sec ???) and It will sometimes hang for no reason.

I'll try Mozilla once i reinstall Mac OS X (new hard drive    ) as it is not compatible with Netscape (i can't be bothered mucking around with it).

I think it is a memory problem because i ran a couple of programs and it slowed down very noticely

Im currently running fire

Thanks for the advise people, im getting some more RAM anyway.  ( 256 MB $120 )

I've found that Chimera, while unstable, is an excellent browser (built on the Moz core) and very, very fast. I believe Apple uses it for their demos.

Chimera is an exellent browser, using it now.

The only problem with it is that it cannot get into yahoo chat rooms. i want a browser that is fast and works is that so much to ask for??

As it is my mum that uses yahoo i think i will be using chimera from now on. it is much much faster than netscape.

Aren't the yahoo chat rooms compatible with IRC clients? At least, that's what I thought... but I don't know. I don't feel a need to talk to the scum and villany hives of newbies.

Dude, ditch Netscape 6 and go with Mozilla. In my opinion(and I'm sure alot of other people have the same opinion) Mozilla is alot faster and better than Netscape. I have never used Mozilla or Netscape on a Mac..so I'm speaking from experience with the PC/Win32 versions. Netscape has been and always will be utter crap.

Really, if it were my Mac I would be using IE. The only reason I didn't say anything about IE is because he said that his system can't handle it(it gets bogged down). I don't see a web browser bogging a system down, but that is what he said. ;P

Mozilla is the best non MS browser out there if you ask me so naturally I recommend Mozilla for people who don't want to use IE.

The only reason i want to be able to go onto the Yahoo Chat rooms is because my mum has alot groups she is part of in there so she needs to be able to go onto the chat rooms. Chimera is the browser i use for general browsing but my mum needs to use netscape to go onto the yahoo clubs.

As for bogging down my system IE and Netscape do that - netscape more actually but IE is unable to go onto the yahoo chat rooms.
