L3 Cache
« on: 12 August 2003, 05:50 »
In my ongoing attempts to figure out why the new G5 processor doesn't have L3 Cache, I found an article in Macworld that tried to explain.

quote:
The PowerMac G4 had three layers of cache RAM, speedy RAM designed to keep the processor fed with raw data so it could operate at peak efficiency. The G5 has two, but the third layer - called Level 3 cache - is gone. Believe it or not, that's not bad news. The PowerMac G5 can use regular system RAM, because that RAM connects to the processor at speeds far faster than any previous Mac model.

sounds cool.  But each CPU only has access to 4gb of ram.  Not that that fact is a disappointment.

From information freely found on IBM's website and from Apple's Keynote speech they said the G5 doesn't need L3 because the traditional bottlenecks found in the G4 don't apply here and it isn't needed.  Let's not forget the G5 does have a 1Ghz FSB for EACH processor...

Latest issue of Macworld goes in-depth into the motherboard. The bus chip is hyperfast, so it makes sense that I could use the DDR RAM as additional processor cache.

Does anyone know if the G5 adds additional instructions to the AltiVec set, or uses something different than AltiVec?

The G5 is an awesome chip there is no doubt in my mind that it isn't.

And to anyone who might say otherwise, the G5 certainly doesn't suck.  ANd it is certainly faster than any Pentium on the market.

It just came from better minds, thats all.

I don't feel like arguing with anyone today so I'm not saying anything.  ;)
