It's not apple's fault. It seems to me that the last part of the statement applies. gzip works great on my Safari.

Oh and in Konkeror too  :D

psyjax is right: my konq works fine with gzip o' course.

Konqueror works fine here as well. So does Safari.

GZIP works fine in all my borwsers. Doesn't "support" it? Are they just talking about a plug-in that forwards it to Sruffit Expander?
Whatever. GZIP is Unix. OS X is Unix. They work together fine for me.
