ABout OS/X ???

I was wondering about Mac OS X i am a Pc person
and of cource a Linux Junkie  
And when i heard of OS/X i gave amc a thought.
I've been thinking of getting a expensive top end
machine, like a Apple or may a Sun Sparc.

Both are better than PC's in many ways.
But are a lot more expensive.

My questions are:

Is there XIMIAN GNOME FOR IT. (its unix so its possible)?

How good do games run?

How different is it from linux?

And last but not least, software can i get for it?

Gnome runs, but you have to install XFree86 and fink beforehand. Both are free from Apple's site.

Games (at least most of the ones I've used on it) scream, provided that they're Carbonized.

Well, it's based off of BSD, so it's very different from linux, however the command-set is very, very similar. Takes a bit of getting used to, but hey, most Unixes do.

You can recompile and run most opensourced unix software under Mac OS X, either using fink or the cc compiler. However, if you wish to purchase software, there's a number of Carbonized programs available for almost anything you'd want.

Also, you can partition your drive and run Mandrake, Yellow Dog, Debian, FreeBSD, or SuSE Linux.

KDE also works along with a few other window managers under XFree86.

But, if you get a Mac, your gonna have a hell of a time just using it as a Mac, an experience like no other!   .

Cool, sounds good.
If its more like BSD thats good, i have a FreeBSD CDR sitting on my rack i had it installed but i only have a 20gb hdd and i needed more room.

I've decided to use Mandrake instead of red-hat for now. I use lots of Operating Systems.

How much is a cheap mac that runs OS X

Check Apple.com (duh!         ) also, you can check MacMall, MacWarehouse, for special deals. You could also endevor to build your own like a few intrepid souls out there        .

My bro. has installd YDL on an old ass 7500 and can run it without a hitch. As far as running OS X any G3 or G4 will run it. I would recomend at least 333Mhz to get snapy results (for a machine like that you may have to scour eBay).

You could get one of the new iMac's. I know people seem to have some sort of aversion to them, but they are pretty awsome little machines.

You could also go for a low-end G4 tower. But however you look at it, your gonna have a hard time scoring a modern mac bellow $2000.

I hear of tons of deals on eBay from time to time tho so I wouldent rule that out. Otpost.com has had good deals on Apples in the past.

P.s. Oh! one more thing, you can lower the price alot by buying only the minumum amount of RAM from Apple and going to a 3rd party source. The same goes for the hard drive and monitor.
