I've tried Fink, but I don't like it. I prefer to download pre-compiled, self-installing OS X packages. There isn't as much software available in OS X packages as via Fink, but the # increases every day and:

1- OS X packages are easy to install and uninstall (you should get OS X Package Manager)
2- the compatibility is better-- it's not just Debian software that's supposed to run on a Mac. The people who make OS X Packages know what runs on their Macs.
3- The packages put the software where it belongs, not in a "sw" folder.
4- You can just use your browser to get them, instead of using Fink Commander.
