« on: 1 December 2002, 19:20 »
Im sooooooo excited, i just got a blue-and-white G3 for free!  its only 300mhz though, which is why i want to ask all you mac users this quesiton:  will it run OS X ok, or will it be slower than shit?

Also, have any of you mac users overclocked a G3 before?

I've never experienced this first-hand, but I've heard that G3s are known to have memory problems while running OS X. There are ways to turn off some of the animations and save memory though. OS X should run fine after that.

You got that for free???

ya i know, my friend was like "yeah my mom is throwing out this G3" and i was like "um ill take that!"  :D

But really, they have memory problems?  would it be helped by putting in more memory than needed?  i.e. if i wanted it to perform like it had 128 megs should i put in 256?

there are numerous G4 upgrade cards for those G3's.  I have a 733G4 Quicksilver and a 600G3 iBook.  I can tell you, it is sometimes a pain to work with the ibook (i probably need to add more memory, it only has 128) I would highly suggest at least 512MB of RAM and try to get one of those upgrade cards.

yeah i was looking at the upgrade cards and i think that as soon as i find $300 i will get the fastest one i can find.

For now, i have only 128 megs of ram and it blows - but i will get some more soon and raise it up to at least 512.

And what would you people say to overclocking it by 50mhz?

I got new/old blue and white a few weeks ago, it runs 10 pretty good havn't had any problems. I was gonna get one of the upgrade cards but the fastest one for the b&w is like 450mhz and mine is already 400mhz, so its not really worth it for me.  But stuff it with memory and it should run fine.

I picked up a Blue and White on ebay recently:

I got a 550 G3 upgrade for $159 new from Other World Computing.

I put a Radeon Card in it and used the included Rage to drive a second monitor. I added a 40 G HD. Ram is 768 Megs. (all parts were just salvaged from my earler Macs).

I LOVE IT.
