Has anyone tried Mac06?

It's a Posix environment for Macs.

Before I try it, I'd like to know how it's worked for others. Is it easy to install, does it get in the way, does it have or lack features, and is it any better than using linux?

I'm looking at putting a UNIX partition on my 6400/180, but haven't decided what to use.

Mac06 is kinda like Windows 9x in reverse. Instead of putting a GUI shell on top of text DOS, you're putting a POSIX shell on top of graphical Mac OS.

If you wanna try a *nix on your Power Mac, try Yellow Dog Linux. It's the whole thing, and not just a little shell.

edit: although, if you wanna mix *nix and Mac OS on that hardware, Mac06 will do it for you... the problem is finding software for Mac06. I'm not knocking Mac06. I like the idea, and it's fairly well implemented, it's just that there' not much support for it =^(

Briefly, it's shareware, but the site doesn't have the price. It says the price is in the documentation.

I think it runs as an application, but it may be an extension or Control Panel.

It says it runs on some systems that don't run Linux.

Oops, I meant to clarify that in my last post.

It's not just for "Classic Macs" as I first posted. It's for Classic OS (7.0 or later). It should run on any Mac with at least 68020 and 8 MB of RAM.

I edited the first post to make it clear. Sorry for the confusion.

As for running regular Linux:
I don't know how well YDL will run modern applications on a 6500...YDL will install on there, but unless you upgraded it a 50 MHz 603e is very skimpy by today's standards.

I just found this site, you can download mac os 1 through 7.  Although im not sure how legit it is...

Damn that place is quality, I didnt realy look over it much the first time.  But I was just checking it out and found all types of old manuals and quality shit.  Although most of it I will never use its good to read about all the old school stuff.

they hardly ripped it off. Xerox had no intention of marketing a computer with a GUI, so the first company that did, Apple, gets lumped with having 'stolen' the idea! don't really see it myself...

MacMinix is pretty neat. It opens up a Minix virtual machine in a window on your desktop. It requires a fairly old 68k Mac, however.
