Swap Partition
« on: 1 January 2003, 23:17 »
I was watching Tech TV's Mac Mania Screen Savers episode and they told how to change your swap file.  I know how to do that already, howevery I do have a question about partitions.  On The Screen Savers they claimed that the fastest partition is the first partition on the drive.  This would lead me to believe that the first partition is on the outside of the drive where the hard drive platter spins faster.  I wanted to know is the first partition is created on the inside of the platter (near the center) or the outside of the platter (near the edge)?

A quick response would be helpful, I just got a new 60 gig hard drive and want to partition it so that my swap file will be on the outside of the platter.

the first partition would be in the center. The center spins faster than the outside.

I'm pretty sure that the center of a circle spinning faster than the outside is impossible.

CD's read faster at the outside of a disk, so we can assume the same for HD's...I think MOR mixed it up.

I think the first partition is on the inside [close to the center].  As far as I know its better to have the swap file there not because the drive spins faster in this spot but because the head has to move around less to read and write.  I could be wrong though, im not 100% sure.

i've decided that the people at Tech TV can't be that stupid and will make my new swap partition my first partition on my new hard drive even though the outside of the platter moves at a higher velocity than the inside.  There are probably other factors involved.
