Losing all this info would really be a waste.

Dosent the webmaster get it free from the server this site is hosted at?

This site is not hosted by Infopop, as far as I know.

I like phpBB, they look good and are free and all that open source shit.

http://office.homelinux.com/forums/

I think they look quite good and I think are much better than these ones

No we don't. And UBB does not "suck ass".

I don't care. Also, let us hope it doesn't.

Why convert from windows to linux?

Because linux is free* software and is better in many ways while windows is propertiary software and is more shit in many ways.

*When I say free, I mean released under the GPL so people can do what they want with it.

Why convert to phpbb?

Same answer as above. Just replace the word "linux" with phpbb and the word "windows" with UBB.

UBB can not compare to phpbb in the same way that linux compares to windows. not ALL open source is better then proprietary.

so, back to the subject,
i just wish UBB had more features. phpbb is good i guess, but i don't really see a reason to go through a lot of work just to get it changed...

When propertiary software is better?
vBulletin is much better than phpbb.

When propertiary software is more shit?
UBB doesn't even come close to phpbb.

And we can get convertors to convert this board to phpbb.

lets leave the forum the way it is. Im sure the webmaster has enough headache as it is anyways. I think for what it does, this forum works fine. Yes, there have been a few times where we could have used some features like stickies & announcement threads, maybe even an accessible member list (for my, uh, veterans wall of the mes    ), but it is not that important. Im still excited for the new name/new site we have been promised, so a new forum is not on the top of my list.

This site has never been hosted at Infopop.  It used to be hosted by Interactive Ideas . . . maybe that's the source of the confusion.

This "change to another BB" thing has come up before, sometimes even be me, but I just couldn't find a real compelling "killer-app" kind of reason to do it.  I also agree that commercial doesn't automatically mean evil.  Remember, not every company is like Microsoft.  Technically, *I'm* a company (well, a sole proprietorship), and I really wouldn't like to think that *I'M* evil just because of that.

I have seen other forums convert -- AppleInsider moved from UBB to vBulletin, for example -- so I'm sure it can be done.  But I have a hard time believing everything will convert smoothly.  Conversions have a funny tendency of screwing up one way or another.
