Faulty hardware
« on: 16 October 2002, 21:07 »
It was mentioned in the mac vs pc discussion that pc hardware goes bad after 3 years. I have noticed the dramatic drop off in PC hardware life span. Hard drives for example, IBM was the best in my opinon until recently, my store recived a whole batch of bad drives. also every scsi ibm we had purchased had either died or developed bad sectors with in a year, Whats up with that? I am affraid to buy any kind of ibm storage device. we had to switch to seagates. Also most of the hard drive market recently changed their warranties from 2 years to 1, i guess the manufacturers are aware that they are making shitty drives. I am of the opinion that electronics are being made smaller and faster and that creates more wear and tear, causing them to break faster. I have seen recent power supplies die after 2 years while several 486 power supplies are still kicking. what do you guys think?

IBM has been having serious issues with thier drives since the 60GXP. Alot of them were either DOA(Dead On Arrival) when shipped to retail stores or they died after a couple days use.

I never have had much faith in IBM(I've Been Mislead ;P) products so I have never bought a drive from them. I'm quite happy with Seagate and Maxtor drives(both companies provide reliable and blazingly fast drives).

I don't know. I've got two home built P100 machines and a Dell P90 that have been running 24x7 for about 5 or 6 years now without a hardware failure. On the other hand, I have seen batches of brand new hardware (hard drives in particular) that have had high failure rates after a couple of weeks. In fact I bought a couple of cheap Microshack AMD K6-2 machines with quick plug hard drive bays. I found out quickly what the advantage of the quick plug hard drive bay was when both machines had hard drive failures very quickly. Of course I think the quick plug bays were the majority of the problem as I don't believe the drives got enough air flow and overheated causing the failures. They've been running fine after mounting the new drives inside the cases rather than in the quick plug bays.

I think buying hardware is sort of like buying fruit. There are good batches/models and there are bad batches/models, then of course there is the occasional lemon. Problem is, when you buy a new machine you won't know if there will be a problem until there is a problem. You don't wait and buy old models until they've been proven because of the rapid development/turnover in hardware devices.

indeed several of the ibm scsi drives we have bought have been doa. also it seems that Western digital and ibms are now made from the same plants which doesnt inspire any confidence.
