Chat Program/ forum member status

OK all, what chat program do you guys run.  I'm using yahoo messenger.  Do you think it is possible and/or would you guys be willing to have your status of being online with your messenger program displayed on this site somewhere?

I think this was we could help new-bee's like myself out more and would help the site to gain traffic.

(Layout in my head)
(Take a pole of what chat program to use/or use the simplest one)

Have a member directory page with searchable directory.  (Like "who is good at MAC or Linux" and "who's online")

Have a function where you can send question to all online users.

Have another function where you can block a user from the member page directory.  IE Goosbery Clock.  To block someone five people have to made complaints about him.  This would help keep Spam out?

I just thought of this and have no idea of much of a pain this would be.

The reason why I think this would be better than a chat program on the site is because you would have to be logged into the site and watching the site page.  Basically keeping you from doing much of anything else.  This way you can use the chat program to simply manage your chat program.  I don?t know.  I?m going to keep thinking on this one and please tell me what you guys think.

Please give comments!!!!

Tech Support: "How can I help you?"
Customer: "I want to lodge a complaint."
Tech Support: "What seems to be the problem?"
Customer: "I specifically asked you not to program my Internet with pornography. I want it removed immediately."
