I have a Dell Inspiron 3500 runing RH 7.3.
I also have a spare USB NIC card that does work with Linux ( i tried it on my PC).
When I put the NIC card in the USB port in the laptop though, it doesnt work.
Do i need to get me one of those network cards for laptops, that slide on the side?

Does Linux show the USB hub? You can look to see if it detected USB at bootup by typing "dmesg | grep USB" and you can see more information by "cat /proc/bus/usb/devices". If not, do you have the USB ports turned on in the BIOS? But yes, a good supported PCMCIA Ethernet card would most certainly work (I use LinkSys).

I see several links to the tp600. Several specifically mention working sound even on very old distros so I'm pretty sure there must be an easy resolution. You might find information in one of the Thinkpad 600 links here:
