Damned Spammers

Has anyone else had to deal with this? I check my email and I get spam. Lots of it. That's not what has me miffed at this moment. I start deleting it all and I come across an email without a sender and the subject

Subject: GNU General Public License for more details. mf
I didn't think anything of it until I opened it. An ad for viagra. Are they starting to come after geeks now or something? Yeah, you normally see the subject lines for these things like "Increase penis size in 2 weeks" or whatever. But the f**king GPL? What the hell?
"George Bush says 'we are losing the war on drugs'. Well you know what that implies? There's a war going on, and people on drugs are winning it! Well what does that tell you about drugs? Some smart, creative motherfuckers on that side."  --Bill Hicks

I think I'm going to have to abandon another email account because I get like ten spam messages per day. Ridiculous.

I don't think anyone heard you  ;)

But i agree, Evolution is the best option for email.

Block the crap, and organize the common messages: like have a folder for friends, one for business, one for school, etc.

for every email account i have, i have a hotmail accont. when i setup the hotmail acounts i check to recieve all of the spam i can. then i go there maybe once every 2 weeks to keep the account active and full. i have about 30 megs of wasted space on a m$ box somewhere. its not going to stop them but i do what i can. i think it would be funny if all of there comps would get so full of spam that they rolled over dead.

Spammers are the scum of the universe - You get to hate these morons when you work for an ISP. I've seen 25 mail accounts get hit with over 250,000 mails over a single weekend.

My own server gets at least 100 - 200 a day!

What can you do?

Depends if you are running your own mail server or just picking your mail up from your ISP's server.

If you are running your own server then go to the link below and install assuming you are running Linux if not then uninstall that $MS rubbish first then go to the link below

http://au2.spamassassin.org/index.html a free and effective piece of software that does wot it says on the tin i.e. assassinates spam! Be czareful though or you might inadvertantly block mail you actually want!

Go visit these sites...

http://www.mailabuse.org
http://www.email-policy.com/Spam-black-lists.htm
http://www.redearthsoftware.com/spam-filter-article.htm
http://www.claws-and-paws.com/spam-l/

If you are running Sendmail then you need to edit /etc/mail/access and reject the ip addresses or mail addresses of the toad that sent the mail (hint view the mail headers)

I have a Sendmail access file with in excess of 2000 addresses in it if you want a copy to get you started send me a mail and I'll send it to you, blocks loads of those septic tank, penis enlargement, viagra etc mails.

Keep a mail address that NEVER appears on a web site. These morons run software that searches websites looking for mail addresses and stash them in a database - They then send spam to all the addresses on the created list, combined with dictionary attacks and it's a never ending war!

If you are running a mail server MAKE SURE IT IS NOT RUNNING AS AN OPEN RELAY if it is these guys will find it and use it to mail all and sundry! The result will be that the mail headers will show the mail originating from your mail server which is kind of embarassing and makes you look a bit of a plonker!

If you are picking mail up from your ISP on a single PC then get a copy of spamcop or other similar software try http://www.download.com or http://linux.tucows.com/

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, EVER CLICK ON THE REMOVE ME FROM THE LIST LINK ON A BIT OF SPAM UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE ADDED TO EVERY SPAM LIST IN THE KNOWN UNIVERSE!

Personally, I switched from Evolution to Mozilla Mail just because it provides me with a built-in, self-learning filter. It works great. I suggest everyone tries it--it almost never lets spam get away.

More than half of the mail sent world-wide every day is spam. That really sucks.
