star trek does not claim to be some work of genius like star wars does, it's just cowboys and indians in space. HOWEVER star trek is based on an optimistic view of the future, whereas star wars is based on a swashbuckling tale of adventure from the past. Star trek has also proved a great storytelling base for all manner of good stories, including racism, sexism and other poignant dtories. Roddenberry was a pioneer of such things, although definitely no huge genius, i think he was a visionary.
He was still just human like the rest of us though, and by the late seventies he'd lost the grip of star trek, and it was a blessing when other people started making star trek. Most of those people are very talented and have been working on star trek in some form for years before they are allowed a 'controlling' position. i like their 'promote from within' mentality. Many of the directors of the more recent seasons' episodes, and of the films, for instance, were actually long term actors from star trek: TNG.
Lets not star a star wars versus star trek thing here because they are totally different things. star wars is an epic tale of high adventure, made as a high budget series of films written and directed by one guy. It has a start and a middle and an end, and it uses many traditional storytelling methods to flow well. Star trek on the other hand is an 'ongoing mission' if you like. it is a huge continuity which we are always seeing new aspects of.
There are a shitload of technical manuals, engineering schematics and suchlike, but these are all gleaned from snippets of the shows. Interesting to note that not only are the machines of star trek technically sound (if we actually had the means to make the components) but that they have in fact inspired people to develop them in real life. For instance the original series of star trek introduced a screen next to the beds in sick bay that showed the vital statistics of the patient, and today this is a reality. I hear that instant matter transportation will take another 50 years to perfect, but that it could be done. Shame i will be too old to benifit from it, that is one invention i really want to be available. I think it would break down a lot of social and economic barriers, and solve a lot of other problems too.
