I hate Windows keys!!
« on: 17 April 2002, 08:02 »
I cannot stress this enough! I HATE THEM! So MUCH!  They get in my way, are useless, and when I hit one while playing half life (or most any other game in windows) it either crashes the computer or makes me lose my sound because the start menu comes up.  Oh, and why are there TWO windows keys? In case one of them breaks?? God forbid you don't have your windows keys operational seeing as how important they are... SHEESH!!!  I think it's just a monopoly status symbol for Microsoft to have its foul logo engraved on everyone’s keyboards as if they assume everyone with a PC uses Windows.. I cannot seem to find a single keyboard without Windows keys anymore.  The arrogance!  Does anyone know where I can get a keyboard that is absent of these utterly moronic keys?  Thank you!

i happen to have a microsoft keyboard (never use it), and it has 4 MS keys and 3 menu key things.
They are the most annoying fucking things ever.
They crammed them in beside the arrows keys, so you accidentally press one every time you try to hit any arrow/del/end/pgdn keys

Use a screwdriver. And if you do like the ability to pop up a menu in a keypress. Use CTRL-ESC it works.

I used a screwdriver, and now my keys are unpressable.

well I think that it would be top if those windows keys miraculously turned into GNOME keys or KDE keys when you fire up those desktops.

I just pasted the old 6-color Apple logo on mine, so now they're just rather good-looking (but still useless) Apple keys.

This has nothing to do with the above, but . . .

Phantom Menace -- do you go to Austin High School in Austin, TX?  I would've gone there, if not for the fact that I instead signed up for the Science Academy at LBJ High School.  Would've been Class of 1992, if not for the fact that we moved out of Texas (thankfully, to be honest) after my sophomore year.

Hmmm.  Small world and stuff.

About the keys. This is exactly what Robert Jung complained about the most in his "The death of a thousand stings" essay. Especially that start button controlling key that fast typing people are touching by mistake more than one time too often. I have experienced this myself and I have also noticed how small the space bar is nowadays on windows based computers. Why is that?

Of course you could just set up linux so the windows key brings upa the programs menu (you morons)

I think its hand cos I have to use windows a lot and my being a lazy arse I can use [START]+R combos to get to the run prompt etc

I prefer [START]+somethign rather than CTRL+ALT+something to STFU.

err... this seems a bit uncalled for, but maybe that is just me.

Furthermore I don't think the gripe is with the funtionality of the key in Linux, I think the isue is weather such a key is necissary at all considering how close it is to the space bar and other frequently used keys.

Imagine typing quicklu and having your finger slip. Even having the program menu maped to the key in Linux would suck as much as the results usualy seen in windoze.

Couple of ideas...

1) Pop the key off the keyboard, dump a little epoxy in the hole, replace key. Use a red magic marker and draw a red circle with a red slash through it over the Win logo.

2) Write a script that sends a random Microsoft Sucks SPAM message to [email protected] with a removeme link that points to www.fuckmicrosoft.com, then remap your KDE keyboard to run the script every time you "accidentally" press the "Win" key.

writing a script that sends SPAM to bill gates isnt a bad idea... but i would would have to set-up an e-mail account.
Or i could set it up to use tripod's auto-mailer that you have access to when you have an account with them, that way billy couldnt track me (easily). Its difficult (nothing is impossible) to block the auto-mailer, because tripod lets you disguise the mail from whatever e-mail address you want (ie. use a different e-mail every time).
