Where the fuck is VoidMain?

It was one of the few large breaks that I can remember in the last 10 years that at least one of my machines didn't automatically page me with some sort of problem that required me to cut it short. Usually there is a major power outage or some network line problem or some other problem. It was a great break!

The only problem that happened while I was gone was my internal home firewall/gateway machine lost a power supply. I tried to get something off one of my home machines from my parents house and couldn't get into it. When I got home last night I noticed the power was off on the gateway. I pulled the power supply apart and found the fuse on the board inside was blown.

I didn't have another fuse of that size so I soldered a piece of wire across it. Plugged it in and ZAP! followed by a small flame. Luckily I had an old 486 stuffed in the corner of the garage with a power supply that the motherboard plugs matched up. Had it up and running a few minutes later. I guess I can't complain. It's a 6 year old home built Pentium 100. Can't expect things to run forever I guess.

Heh heh, well the thing is I knew that something was likely shorted within the power supply that caused the fuse to blow in the first place. I was hoping it was just a buildup of dust. After blowing all the dust off and soldering the wire on I crossed my fingers but fully expected to see flames. If I didn't see flames I would have dug up a fuse to replace the one that was blown. But if I did see flames I knew the PS would have been too far gone for me to consider repairing anyway. Luckily I had a junk machine with a good PS. Otherwise I would have had to make a trip to the computer shop to pick up a new/used PS for a few bucks.

Oh, and I enjoy living on the edge.
