I was wondering if you would be willing to help me set up my linux box to make it "easy" like you say linux is.  I'm gonna download RH 9 when they release it on FTP, then I will install it.  Your info seems to have a bogus AIM and you don't accept PM's, this was the only way to reach you.  If you are interested in helping reduce the use of Windows on my PC to games only please email ([email protected]) or AIM me (jeffberg3000)

Thx for any help you are willing to give.

Word, X11.

RH9 is the perfect choice.  GNOME reminds me more of Mac OS (9 more than 10) than KDE does, especially by default.  It's also the best-made Linux OS, and has the least issues.  I'll certainly help ya with any problems you have.  There's one thing that makes it particularly easy and that's apt-rpm.  I'll show you how to use it when you get RH9 installed.

BTW you don't have to wait until RH puts it on their FTP, you can use bit torrent (forgot the link, google for it)

I'm downloading RH9 via bit torrent as I type this.  I want to try it out and it will also help me help you with any troubles you have.  The beta was pretty slick, this should be even better.

What is the advantage of buying it?  The personal edition didn't even come with installation support and only 30 days of basic network setup support.  I guess it does have printed manuels though.

Got it downloaded burned and its installing right now.  I chose the completely default Desktop installation, just so I don't complicate things.  Now what is this apt-rpm.  Also it would be much easier to talk with you if we could do it on AIM, again its jeffberg3000
if u wanna use ICQ I have that too 103334603

Ok, but I'll have to set up an AIM account as I use MSN only currently.

Download this RPM and install it (double click it in nautilus)

http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/redhat/9/apt/apt-0.5.5cnc4.1-fr1.20030325a.2.i386.rpm

After that type

>apt-get update

on the command line to refresh the package repository.  Then type

>apt-get install synaptic

to install the graphical software installer frontend to apt-rpm.

Tell me if you need help!

Yep, fink is identical to Synaptic. Both use the apt-get package management system and they r00l!

Are you root?

Also try typing /sbin/apt-get instead of apt-get

/sbin is where the system programs are often kept.

thx for your help, that apt-get thing makes it so much easier to install software.  I even got vncserver installed and running.  Now I can use my Linux box from my Mac, until I get a better monitor for it.  Also somehow Linux automatically installed my printer that was shared from my windows box, just like my Mac, good job RH (or whoever did that)

I do have one ?.  In VNC it seems to drop out the antialiasing and cursor shadow.  Is there any way to keep those?  I like them, and over a lan it won't slow it down much.
