If anyone ever remembered me talking about building a linux laptop from scratch...

Well, I am halfway there! Except for two things:
1) I know laptop graphics will never compare to a desktop - that's why my behemoth of a computer is under my desk - however, I would like to use my laptop to watch the occasional Mpeg and at least handle Doom or RA2 for the occasional game.
But what works with Linux and, since I only know about the ATI graphics chip Radeon 9600, what is out there for laptop graphics? (A good site about them would help too!)
Ick, so many changes and so little 1337 within...
Please help!
