Help!
« on: 15 April 2002, 22:31 »
I would love to get rid of the MS XP operating system that came on my computer!!! It sucks.
I mostly use it to play 3D game (Wolfenstien, Medal of Honor, Flight Sim 2002, NASCAR 2002, Need For Speed Etc... I switched to Netscape for Internet stuff but how can I get rid of this XP stuff and still play all the games I love? I have had hotmail for years before I found out it too was a Microsoft product. Is Yahoo?

I also posted this to the MAC O/S forum.

to play games distributed as binaries, for execution in windows, you need, sadly, windows. As far as i know, those binaries are not portable to other OSs without access to the source code.

This means you will have to dual boot between windows and another OS, or run another OS, with either a windows emulator such as wine, or a virtual machine, like VMware, with windows installed, in your new OS. the virtual machine will probably cost a lot of money, and wine is reputedly not perfect, so yr best bet is to dual boot between windows and either linux or BSD, or both.
Then you can use yr new OS for internet and windows for gaming.
You also get to choose which one you use for everything else, which is one better than if you have windows alone installed.

I suggest you get partition magic and partion your windows partition right now, then format you hard drive, install windows2K, THEN install Linux-Mandrake Gaming Edition you can setup the bootloader during the install and its as easy as that.
But you dont really need windows, there are plenty of cool games for linux: Wolfenstein, Unreal Tournament, Quake, The Sims (comes with mandrake gaming edition) and a few other good games for linux. Most of them run better on Linux than they do on windows.
It all depends on how many games you want.

Thanks for the lead.  I never posted anything before so I didn't know where to post my question.  You mentioned the Game Edition of Mandrake.  Any lead on where to buy this.  Will it run on my AMD 1900+ system?  Is this as simple as XP to install.  I'm certainly no wiz at this computer stuff so I hope it's pretty easy.

Thanks

You don't have to buy it, just d-load it from:

http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/

Another good link with alternate linux distros is:

www.linuxiso.org

Great thing about Linux is that it is free. And yes, it will run on any x86 processor. Just read the documentation on the site if you want to make absolutely sure all your hardware is compatible.

As far as installation, it's a snap. But you are going to need to partition and/or reformat your hard drive, so Id back up important files etc.

If you have a regular connection or would like to purchace Mandrake with the books and extra support it's only around 70 bucks or so and you can get it at their site.

really? i thought you had to pay to get the mandrake gaming edition due to some of the licences for the games costing money, so you have to buy that edition in a box from your software vendor. (it's only about AUS$70 though isn't it? and that's not much!)

Can you really download it? you can certainly get the normal mandrake version with tons of stuff, but the games?

Oh, I think your right. The special gameing editions come with the games pre-installed and stuff.

Hmmm...

Then why is that so attractive? I mean, just d-load Mandrake, then install the games yourself. You save money that way, and don't have to de-install games and stuff if you decide you don't want them anymore.

Either way, buying Mandrake is cost effective, and it helps keep the community alive.

EDIT: Oh, there is also Linux AE, so games made by them are ported over and stuff. I guess that's a benifit if you are a fan of AE games.

It seems this is a new feture of Winex that comes with the packadge.

I see the deal now  :D !
