All sites that bash operating systems are full of shit. In the real world every OS has it's place.

Windows = Mainstream OS that can do everything, has a huge software library, has support for about any piece of hardware you can buy, is user friendly and isgood for gameing.

Linux = Good for servers because of it's reliability. It is good if you do simple stuff like listen to MP3s and browse the net, it is not a good solution for home users who are into gaming, multimedia, etc., It lacks mainstream software support and it lacks hardware driver support(this is not true with some hardware like NVidia based video cards, but the majority of hardware requires a person to write his own Linux driver).

BeOS = Excellent OS for Multimedia but lacks in the gaming, hardware, software support. It runs like a champ on old systems that run Windows slowly(like old Pentium systems w/low RAM).

MacOS = Good for professional photo editing, video editing and audio editing. It is a reliable OS and it has excellent hardware support(because Apple keeps Macs as a closed system architecture..therefore there is not a large variety of hardware for Macs). It lacks in mainstream app and game support, but it has enough apps to do what a typical Mac owner would want to do. Blizzard is good about making games for Mac and PC.

In the end, Microsoft Windows is the best choice because it can do everything and it has all of the support a person could want from an OS. Windows NT is a good choice for servers and home desktops(especially with the new release of WindowsXP).

Opinion of course. I don't believe anything with MS in the name should come anywhere near a server.

That's just your opinion, a very selfish one at that..

Let's face it, if windows wanted to make an amazing server side OS, they would, and it could be the best, but they aern't interested in that, they want money, power, not to be the best ..

All people who feel Microsoft is the best are full of shit.    (And in case you haven't noticed, I do try to always begin my posts with either a mildly or overtly offensive statement. Now either read my post and quit whining or go away you fuckhead.)

Windows is now also the ONLY non *NIX major operating system. Kind of ironic that M$ used to drawl endlessly on how you _need_ M$ software for "compatibility". (An even more ironic, or perhaps moronic, statement considering the number of open standards that M$ is responsible for killing.)

Linux is also free if you want it to be, not to mention the huge amount of free software that is available only to the *NIX world (and thus is available for Linux). I would say Linux is only good as a desktop OS if you happen to have more than two functional brain cells (a rare thing these days). If you are either too stupid or too lazy to learn Linux, then stick with Winblows.

I don't know much about BeOS, but is anybody else noticing how this guy is of the firm belief that if it ain't M$ it's only suitable for a niche market?

"It lacks in mainstream app and game support . . ." What an utter pile of bullshit. Even M$ makes their infernal piece of shit Office suite for Macintosh, and yet Macintosh is somehow lacking in mainstream applications. No, Macintosh is lacking in having five billion different choices for each task you want your computer to do, which is not really too bad.

Now, as far as games go, Mac does lag; however, in my not-so-humble opinion, they do not lag as seriously as this guy would want you to believe.

Okay, I've said it before and I'll say it again: There is not a god damn thing you can do on a Windows machine that you can't do on a Macintosh. What you CAN expect from a Macintosh is a computer that doesn't crash constantly, doesn't assume you are an idiot, and yet has had (right up until OS X) built in help that is easy for the average idiot to access. You can also be guaranteed that your hardware will work flawlessly together, something that is a rare treat sometimes for a PC user (especially if they build thier computer from scratch).

Windows NT is the worst choice for a server. Every time I see an NT box I just have to shake my head and ask, "WHY?? Why must the world be tormented with this???" Windows NT may have multitasking, but that doesn't prevent it from crashing if you have an extreme load (funny thing how people fix this buy getting another fucking NT box instead of replacing the damned OS with UNIX and eliminating the problem right there). Microsoft also simply does not understand security; you want proof, than go look at the sheer volume of M$ security holes compared to, say, OpenBSD (even Linux is more secure than NT for crying out loud). There are so many security problems with Microsoft's products that they are now strong-arming the rest of the software industry into joining a coalition that will prevent the knowledge of these holes from going public. And in case you think this is a good thing, it ain't. This coalition will NOT stop hackers from discovering these holes; it WILL remove pressure from M$ so they will never have to fix it.
I can't get over you until you get out from under him.

Can somebody tell me how it's selfish to say that M$ stuff shouldn't come near a server?
Also, if windows (sic) are so smart, why is this miraculous 'amazing server side OS' still not in evidence (in the real world anyway)?
I don't believe that Microsoft are a company that would have the know how to bring out such a fantastic thing and... not do it. They would do anything for the money (in my, probably selfish, opinion) so why aren't they out touting their fantastic new server side OSs?
Well, i am obviously not too clued up since i really can't figure it out. Please enlighten me my friend 'serpent'...

Calum, a company with the size and power of Microsoft could make whatever they want, they have enough people to code amazing Operating systems..

Ok, I was abit harsh with my words, and i'm no fan of Microsoft, but they are very clever am sure, they can't be that size, and not be able to come up with something better than, FreeBSD ?

There are probably plenty of very intelligent and talented programmers at M$. That's not the problem as these programmers aren't in charge. They are under the thumbs of the suits: guys like Ballmer who wouldn't recognize a piece of well-written code if it came up and bit him in the ass, and Bill Gates, who "thinks" he can factor large prime numbers. As any sixth grader knows, prime numbers can't *be* factored. It's these marketing types who run M$ whose credo is sell the sizzle and t'hell with the steak. Instead of letting the programmers code a stable OS, they convince the public that BSODs and crashes are normal and natural. Instead of writing secure code, they convince the technically illiterate that the problem is with "hackers", not inherently ill-written, insecure code. Instead of actual innovation (after Windows 95, M$ simply ran out of ideas) take the same old thing, bloat it up, and sell it as something grand and glorious. And always make certain that you maintain appeal to the absolute lowest common denominator. It's easy and it makes a lot of money - and the actual product *sux*. Why should they care? After all, nobody ever got fired for buying Microsoft. And, as H. L. Mencken pointed out: "Noone ever went broke by underestimating the intelligence of the American public".

Look at this 'Microsoft Rules' Moron. I don't care about his/her moronic posts but they are all over the place. floodong should definitely be clamped down upon.
On another note,
Maybe M$ should bring out a *NIX version of windows, it could be called 'Winsux' or something like that, if they programmed it deliberately to crash and seize up then i believe it would work much better than the system they are selling right now. I mean how often does Windows actually do what it's supposed to?

"Winsux", I *love* it.  If MS wins the case agains Lindows, that's what Lindows should change their company name to!
