Fortunately the graphics card wasn't fucked.

I've since upgraded to a better motherboard and graphics card anyway.

Windows 2008 R2 being very badass with NIS support. You could use ldap or even kerberosIV. I am logged in using it to my freebsd firewall.

My shitty PC: 1.8GHz CPU, 512MB RAM, PC2100 motherboard, ATI Rage fury video with 32MB RAM.

It has a CRT screen which can do 1280x1024 but it can only 60Hz at that resolution which is unbearable so I keep it at 1152x864 because it can do 75Hz which is flicker free.

Wow, I have better computers sitting in a pile ready to be thrown out. Also, I've never noticed the 60hz flicker. Everyone else does.
