i know this has been asked before, but my friend is doing a paper on unix and needs some info about the evolution of unix. if anybody has any could you please post some links that would be helpful.

First of all, this should probably be in the UNIX forum, but there should be a link in one of the posts there regarding the "family tree" of Linux, which takes it back to early UNIX days.  You might find that interesting or find some more searching terms.
