POP3 server - DOESN'T RESPOND

I've been [email protected] since august 2002 and there've been problems before. Usually it's been because of DNS problems and I can be understanding with that. But now it won't let me login. I try hard not to use this account because of it not being very dependable. I don't expect customer service for my little donation. BUT I REALLY LIKE THIS ADDRESS. I keep it clean, don't get that much traffic there anyways. I tried getting someones attention but no help through email. If you want to donate to help this site do it out of a sense of altruistic cyber activism - not because of the pop account.

The site got transferred to a new server and location.  Mail isn't set up at all.  Heck, I didn't even know anyone used the fuckmicrosoft.com mail anymore.

Was working fine until a week ago.  I've been around the net a while now and in the last 10 years I've had dozens of email account - hell I used Mosaic through trumpet winsock on IBM global network long before Microsoft ever got their hands on it - and this has been my favorite address ever since I sent my donation over 2 years ago.  I realize that maintaining a site such as this must be a pain in the butt so I apologize if my complaining seems excessive.  It's more out of enthusiasm than any desire to criticize.  I greatly admire what you're doing and try to do my part whenever I can.

We are aware of the problem.
The reason it is offline right now, is because of problems with the server migration.

Next time, e-mail your complaint thru official channels  ;)

Well, to be fair, they can't e-mail the complaint, because there's no mail server.    

Here's what's happening.

Runkpock, the admin of the old boxen, didn't do backups of the mail before removing all Microsuck domains from them.  Due to a miscommunication between us, he deleted the domains because he assumed I had backups of them all.  I had backups of the DNS zone files and the site (including the forums, obviously), but not the mail.

So we have to start anew.  I will reinstate the POPs of people who had them before, once the new mail server is up.  As I type this message, I'm building the new mail server.  Give me a few more days (hopefully), and it should be ready to go online.

Going forward, POPs will cost a *wee* bit more (not much) but you'll get more in return.  (Details to come.)  Forwards are also going to cost money, though only a small amount.  The reason for this is that we now have to pay for hosting and for a separate, business-class broadband connection for the mail server.  (No web host really offered the kind of flexibility I needed for Microsuck mail, so I had to roll my own solution.)  Charging -- even a tiny amount -- also has the nice added benefit of weeding out the assholes who sign up for 94,396 forwards for the hell of it.

Runkpock tells me there were something like 100,000 (!) forwards, the huge majority of which were garbage.  I'm not especially upset to see them go, to be quite honest.

Anyway, bear with me.  I have lots to do in addition to restoring new, improved mail.  The site has to be redesigned to line up with Microsoft's current website (and new typefaces!), for one thing.  I have to get someone to code the automation of e-mail signup.  I have to convert these forums to vBulletin.  And various other things.  They'll get done.  This time, I swear they will.

I've a better idea - don't charge for POPs, but figure out a way to charge USD 1.00 per month for each forward.  You'd be a multi-millionaire by now.   :D

The new mail server's pretty much all set up.  Soon we'll have a fully automated signup process, but in the meantime, I'll respond to people's "hey, I used to have [email protected] e-mail and it doesn't work now!" complaint e-mails one by one, as they come in.

Meaning you, mrioso, can feel free to e-mail me ([email protected]) to reinstate your account.  Bear in mind it's going to be a brand-new, fresh account, so go ahead and re-specify the password and stuff you want . . .

One little sneak preview:  The new e-mail system features INCREDIBLY aggressive spam filtering.  I swore the damn thing wasn't working for several days, until I tried some test e-mails to myself, for the hell of it, and found that it was indeed working.  I used to get 10-20 spams an hour (this happens when you're webmaster/postmaster/admin @ any domain name), and since the new system's been in place (several days now) I haven't gotten A SINGLE ONE.

actually, it was me who was doing it. i always log onto aim (when i'm awake, i need a life).

I'm pretty much finished, need to add a page where users can change their passwords. ComSense will take what I made and put it in a nice layout, so right now its pretty ugly. If you have pop mail and need it fixed just e-mail him, if u want to buy a pop account go to http://mail.ms-eradication.org.
