I wont shut down my PC (UNLESS we get a thunderstorm. I had my video card fried one time from that).

   Ill keep a log how many times Linux will go into "Please reboot me cause i feel emotional" and what programs and how many times they will crash.

  I will do ALL of my work with Linux.

  I know all of you will say good luck waiting for Linux to crash. But just a small stupid project of mine.

I shut down my Linux box every night (I have no reason to keep it on overnight), and I still haven't had a crash yet. Same with my iMac running OS X.

I had my somethin in Linux fuck up after a thunderstorm knocked out the power twice while it was running (i was stupid and turned it on after the thunderstorm just ended and then the power went out).
I leave my server runnin all the time. I in fact wait for the power to go out during a thunderstorm, then i leave it off until its over. Its a crappy old computer and i dont care that much if it gets fried (it means that i get to upgrade to OpenBSD if it fries).

Well, you may have better luck getting it to crash than I do.  Some are better at it than others.  I'm not very good at it.  I never shut my Linux boxes off. I've got a heavily used RedHat 7.0 server that was up for almost 500 days before an extended power outage.  Now it's back up to 69 days of uptime.  Let's see, 568.9 days up, 0.1 days down on a single outage, what kind of availability percentage is that?  Actually since everything automatically failed over to a backup server at a different location there was actually zero loss in availability.

Yep, and Yep.  Actually the backup server runs all the time and is a mirror/secondary of the primary server which provides web sites for many domains, POP/IMAP/SMTP for many users, DNS, news, etc, etc, etc.  I wrote a hearbeat program that automatically changes DNS to point ot it as the primary server and configure itself accordingly.  Works like a champ.  It's actually failed over to the secondary more than once because of network trouble at the provider, but not because the server was down.

yeah, i had a 60mhz dell with a months uptime, then the power went out, but the way, how big of a ups would i need to power 5 desktop boxs and 3 monitors, not to mention a laptop. and howmuch would this thing cost, cuase im getting sick of these 1 second blips, that makes everything reboot, and im also sick of reseting clocks in my room, so they would go on it too.

I would not put the monitors on the UPS, only the main boxes (well you could put your main monitor on one so you have some light when the rest of the house is dark), but you generally want to limit the draw of power.  The more things you have plugged in to it the less time you will have during a power outage.

APC probably makes the most popular and cheapest small UPSes for home and small server room use although they do make very large ones too. Just look at the power consumption on all of your power supplies and devices that you plug in to it, add it all up and figure out what would be the best solution for you based on how long you want the equipment to stay powered up in the event of an outage.  You may want to go with two or three small units, or one larger one depending on the price and your needs. You can also hook up a serial cable and have your server do a clean shut down before the battery life runs out.

The secondary is 400 miles from the primary, on a different network provider and if the power goes out in both places at the same time for an extended period of time then we've probably got bigger problems than a little thunderstorm.

is it safe to run a ups off a ups, like have a ups pluged into a ups and only have the serial cable pluged into the dell so it can shut everything off, or would that be a bad idea. cuase i was thinking that a lot of small ones would be a shit load cheaper then the 3000va/*i think*/ one that i saw
