Free hosting with support for cgi-bin?
« on: 21 August 2002, 00:50 »
i know this comes up ocassionally, but the forums at http://www.polytheism.cjb.net/forum tend to get inaccessible sometimes. i suspect it is when too many users are logged onto the different sites hosted on the same machine all at once. So, i would like to shift the forums to some other host. Since i am not making any money off of it, i would like to use a free host.

Anybody happen to know of a free host that has support for me to run phpBB with a MySQL database on it? i know it's a big ask, but i'm looking anyway and i thought, maybe somebody would know here already.

ta in advance, btw....

I have had you forums not run when i have been there a couple times. It isnt working write now either, it tell me critical error cant connect to database.
I dont think there is any free host that will do that save nelie.org.

Of course the forums at The Bob Hub never get clogged or slow, it is runnig as smooth as can be.

does phpBB have to use a MySQL database? Maybe you will have to use YaBB or ikonboard.

i think it can use any sql database (or other? are there any other kinds?) but i am such a novice at this and i want to be able to keep all the posts on the old board.

Why indeed does the bob board always stay up? is it because it is run on your own personal machine?

portland.co.uk looks promising so far, and DK3.com will set up a phpBB board for you in minutes for free, however i don't see any easy way to transfer my files or easily customise the database. It looks like it has been customised only for point and click people, unless i have missed something...

Portland does not allow hosting of message boards (And they only have 100mb of bandwidth per account, anyway). phpBB will run off of other SQL databases, and I know ionichosts.com provides unlimited bandwidth (I think) and comes with php, mysql, a cgi-bin and a pop up ad

tripod.com supports cgi bin. you can only run YaBB or ikonboards on tripod though since it only supports perl. you can set either YaBB or ikonboard to run WITHOUT a database, it works fantastic for forums with mild to moderate traffic but if you hit the limit of 20mb it will not let anybody post lol.

if your site isn't that busy, i'll host ya    ;)
i'm only on DSL but it's 1.5mb with Perl 5.6, PHP4 and MySQL 3.23
for some reason i can't get phpBB to work on my computer because it has some thing about a database error, it says it writes twice but i've never actually tested it with a database which has already been established.

can i have a copy of your database just to test if i can actually run a phpBB?

hey, red ranger bob, i was able to create a board from that beta test thing, pretty snazzy dude   ;)
here is the url for my referance to see if the forum actualy stays up lol
