The Children's War
by J. N. Stroyar

I think this is an excellent book. I did not finish it because I had to get it back to the library. It is set in modern day Europe, but there is a twist. The German Reich controls all of Europe. This is not some silly Sci-Fi book. It is a chilling look at what life would be like under a modern day Third Reich. At one point in the book, one of the characters (Peter) has to fix a chair belonging to the man of the house, to whom he is a servant, and upon removing the fabric stuffing falls out of the  chair. But to Peters surprise, the stuffing is hair.
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.
John Stuart Mill
