Brit charged with hacking Pentagon, Nasa

What idiot wrote this article, and who fed him this line of bull?

He is accused of scanning networks for vulnerabilities prior to using a software program called RemotelyAnywhere to snoop on network traffic and erase files.

"This is an incredibly sophisticated cyber criminal," Newark U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie told Reuters. "He was a very busy guy."

Obviously, Newark U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie does not know how easy it is to do what this guy did. He is not a sophisticated cyber criminal. Hey used A canned vulnerability scanner and then used RemotelyAnywhere to "crack" (not hack
as it says in the title. Anyway...)computers
running Windows. AND THE GUY GOT CAUGHT!!!
(I remember hearing that you should not begin a sentence with a preposition. Isn't "AND" a preposition?)

An unemployed British sysadmin was yesterday indicted for what US authorities describe as the "biggest hack of military computers ever detected".

Gary McKinnon, 36, of London, was charged in absentia with one count of causing intentional damage and seven counts of computer fraud relating to alleged attacks on scores of US government computers in a period spanning over a year.

From February 2001 until March 2002, McKinnon allegedly exploited poorly-secured Windows systems to attack 92 networks run by NASA, the Pentagon and 12 other military installation scattered over 14 states. Private sector businesses were also affected by the alleged attacks, which caused an estimated $900,000 in damage overall.

According to court papers filed in New Jersey and Virginia yesterday, McKinnon mounted an attack in attack in February this year that shut down Internet access to 2,000 military computers in the Washington area for three days.

Prosecutors told Reuters that McKinnon "stole passwords, deleted files, monitored traffic and shut down computer networks on military bases from Pearl Harbour to Connecticut".

Despite the seriousness of the alleged attacks, US authorities are keen to stress no classified information was obtained through the year long assaults.

Authorities believe that McKinnon (whose handle is Solo) acted alone and are not attributing his alleged crimes to any terrorist motive.

US authorities are seeking to extradite McKinnon, who faces charges punishable by fines of up to $1.75 million in fines and 80 years in jail (each count in his indictment carries a maximum prison term of 10 years).

Reuters reports that McKinnon's lawyers in London yesterday issued a statement yesterday admitting that he was arrested in March for computer-related offences. His present whereabouts, and even if he is currently held in custody, remain unclear.

In theory, this means that many of the US government "crackers" and "cyber crime experts" are really just script kiddies with massive technical manuals.

If they really knew their shit, they woulden't be so horrified at what this guy did.

This kind of horseshit is quite common. You have to remember that Christie is the prosecutor. So, of course, he's going to say that the perp is the most foul, devilishly clever, and diabolical criminal master-mind ever to draw breath. It makes him look good, after all, he busted "an incredibly sophisticated cyber criminal", sounds a helluva lot more impressive than saying he popped another script kiddie. (One suspects that the truly sophisticated cyber criminals don't get caught     ) And such talk serves to taint the jury pool before the trial's even begun.    ;)

It's a common trick. Pay no attention.

i heard this on the radio yesterday. oddly they didn't mention anything about the computers he 'hacked'. They did say however that america had described him as 'the world's most sophisticated hacker' (and that's a quote).

I did wonder how much unix experience this guy had since he is a system admin in the UK (which means he works with braindead systems only as far as i can see), but now you say he was just running some crap on a windows machine to 'hack' into the US gvernment's computers, and frankly they should not be running windows on any machine they expect to stay secure. of course they won't learn.

On the radio they had a spokesman from some organisation in the states who said these 'hackers' were all boasting to their mates about how clever they were but when they are caught they start behaving in an adolescent fashion. They never had a quote from the alleged perpetrator.

Any word on whether they have successfully got him to go to the US to stand trial yet? as far as i know he has no obligation to visit the states and until he does he cannot be prosecuted.
