Desperately Seeking Help
« on: 4 January 2003, 07:15 »
Hello Everybody:

I have a little problem.  There is a file that I really need to view and I can't open it.  I am not very computer savvy beyond pointing and clicking.  the file is a "temporary file" but I'm sure it was deliberately changed to prevent anyone from getting into it (otherwise why would someone burn several CD that has only these "temporary files" on it.

I hope you can give me a little advise or point me to a place that I can get the information for myself.

Thank you in advance

It's .tmp; and I have access to Windows 98 and Windows XP.

Thank you for taking the time to look at this for me.

hold <shift> and right click the files. then select 'open with'.
Becuase windows cnnot tell what type of file it is, you will have to try opening it with a lot of different programs and see what result you get. If you used Linux for instance, you would just point and click them, and if a suitable program was installed to view those files with, it would just open using that automatically. Saves all this farting about that you will now have to do in windows.

Rename the file, and change the extension back to what it's supposed to be.

I tried Calum's suggestion and have gotten into some of the files.  Unfortunately, they are what I suspect they were.

Thank you very much.  Now that I know what kind of files they are I can rename them and keep trying.  Thank you SOOO much!  I can't tell you how much this has helped!  I'm one of those people that wish computers were never invented! You guys are great!

In other words, someone who Windows was truly meant for.

Probably.  I'm from the precomputer generation.  I just think the good that they have brought to us does not outweight the damage they have done.  Maybe, eventually, guys like you will change that balance.  I hope so.

To All:

Thanks again.

what good? maybe you should get a mac... they really were meant for you. none of this frustration i promise you. In fact a mac would have automatically opened the files with the correct app with no typing or anything required on your behalf.

i blame Microsoft for all the damage computers have done. microsofts windows is the biggest joke i have ever seen. its like they see what works, on mac & *nix, then do the exact opposite of that.

Hey See Saw,

Bet you're not older than me.  Have you seen the last half century in person?  If not, then you can't hide behind your age as an excuse for being a WIndows user.  Not that I believe that there's any   excuse for being a WIndows user other than not having a friend who can help you become free.

I'm no genius or guru, just another person trying to  get things done with computers. I switched to Linux  a couple of months ago.  I've never been happier interacting with a computer.  I will never go back.  Try it, you may... no, if you give it a fair shot.. you WILL love it.

Strap on a set of balls, install Linux on an older computer or, set your current machine up as a dual boot whore if you prefer, and give Linux a real try.  Don't hide behind your age.  There are people here and elsewhere on the internet who will help you over the rough spots.  Be an American and be free.

Jim (who has had lots of beer tonight and is gald to be free from Microsoft!)
