Getting rid of index.dat
« on: 12 January 2003, 04:16 »
Tried to delete the file ie5 in "temp internet folders" but the prompt says "system file" and won't allow it. Yet it contains info about my viewing habits I would rather be without. How do I get rid of the sucker?

First of all, welcome to the boards. Now, as to your question, I'm afraid I can't help since I don't use Windows. Perhaps, you should read the "Microsoft's really hidden files" article for an answer to your problem. However, if that doesn't help you could always pay a visit to the windowsbbs page.

[edit]or as choas wrote you could use an operating system that doesn't make you its bitch (no offense)[/edit]

one small solution would be to use a real browser. But i feel the best solution is to use an "operating System that doesn't make you its bitch". (Thanks chaosforages    )

okay, here's one article about getting rid of index.dat files and here's another one.

Actually the best way to sort out this problem is to set up a dual boot with linux. i found that once i booted into linux, i could easily delete all those windows files using konqueror or nautilus (both of which are at least as easy to use as windows explorer).
