and this topic has been done to death.

I am sure many people here could write a faq about this if they just made the effort. I might do it if nobody else has once i can actually get round to finishing the ones i am already doing...

Q) Why does Linux exist?
A) http://ragib.hypermart.net/linux/#In%20The%20Beginning

Q) Can Linux go bankrupt?
A) Linux started bankrupt so it can not "go bankrupt". Vendors of Linux can go bankrupt but Linux itself can not go bankrupt because no Vendor owns it. It's a "grass roots" operating system. People created it because they love to program, people that love to program will continue it's development no matter what companies/corporations are or are not involved with that process.

Q) What is the meaning of Open Source
A) The meaning of "Open Source" is much different than the meaning of "Free Software". Linux falls under the "Free Software" philosophy. For more information about both and comparisons of their philosophy look here:

And for a good example of what is *not* Free Software you might want to read this article:

just so we can lay it on out there for the world to see... would divert a lot of questions i think.
