Getting rid of Hidden files for good?
« on: 13 February 2002, 02:30 »
I want to get rid of the URL's, cookies, and all that stuff from my PC. I know there are some articles on this, but they were a little confusing.

What do I do? I know there are a few programs that do this, but they are really expensive. Doing it manual works just as good, right?

Thanks

Also, is there away I could automatically delete the files on start up?

If you are using win98, it's very simple, get a printout of the r1ddler's article, or write down enough notes that you'll remember the instructions, then "Restart your computer in M$-DOS mode" and voila! you will have a command prompt ready to go!
I didn't know a thing about DOS and i had no problems following the r1ddler's instructions, just go through it step by step, and it will all become clear as you do it.
Not too sure about win2k though, it's an NT, so will have different non-DOS rules.

Hitting F8 a couple of times during the boot up process should bring up a list of options on how your want your computer to finishing booting.  Pick the "command line" option and you'll be set to go.

it will work perfectly for win98, and i am not 100% sure about IExplore 6, but i tried it with 5.5 and no problems.

It's odd that you can't get true dos mode from win98.
If i were you i'd go to the start menu, select shut down, and you should get 4 options, 'shut down', 'restart', 'sleep' and 'restart in msdos mode'
Of course you choose 'restart in msdos mode' and it just boots up to a command prompt, which should look like this:

C:/WINDOWS>

This means you are in the windows folder/directory on the C: drive, that's the folder where windows is installed (unless you put it somewhere else, but that's highly unlikely).
to get to this prompt, you might want to try that F8 thing, or i have heard that sometimes it's some other F* key that you need to press.
That's all i know!

http://www.98lite.net/ieradicator.html
Would this program cover the IE portion? Or does that just delete the references? If it deletes all the references, then should I just download a trial of Bestcrypt or something and have it wipe it with 1's and 0's?

Opera and Mozilla don't log everything you do, do they? (LOL)

i haven't tried that ieradicator program yet, tell you what, give me 24 hours, and i will. Then i'll post back here and let you know which internet exploder 'really hidden files' it has or hasn't removed...

I suspect that you will need to run ieradicator first, then you will probably still need to remove the 'really hidden' files manually. We shall see...
