Bokononism (not Bob)
« on: 25 July 2002, 16:49 »
Well, i just started reading a novel by Kurt Vonnegut, 'Cat's Cradle'. In it, he invents a new religion, which seems quite sensible to me, so clickhere to read the entirety of Bokononism's scriptures. There's only a couple of pages worth, since Vonnegut did not, as far as i know, write about it except in passing in this one novel.

[edit: it was cruel... i changed it back]

We will have a utopia... by any means necassary. You will join us.
Look, looook at the picture, and forget, forget your troubles, your stresses, your doubts and your worries, just look at the picture......

You are happy, carefree and relaxed. This is what being a member of the cult of Bob is like, through your whole life you will feel this, happy, secure, no worries, no hassles, just Bob. You will be Bob, your friends will be Bob, we are all Bob. Repeat after me: "WE ARE ALL BOB". WE ARE ALL BOB. WE ARE ALL BOB. You are now one of us. Go forth, and be happy with your new calm and relaxed state of mind, and help others to become as happy as you are too. However, as soon as you leave this page, you will instantly forget you ever witnessed this brainwashing routine. You will forget, for we are all Bob. Including you.

what a fucking effortful bastard. Why wouldnt god just drink some of her(i guess its possible it could be 'him') braincells away when she got lonely?? Instead of putting all that effort into making mud think and move. God is forcing mud to make lots of effort although it did make mud happy. God should have just drank some alcohol and ate some cheese.. then she would have her cheese and alcohol and not be lonely.

Whats with the karasses... god is cruel, making all the karasses put forth lots of effort for her, that is mean and disturbing. They are using way to much brain power and manual loabour to worship her without even knowing.

It doesnt sound like much of a utopis, whats the point of it? This religion will cause many wars. It will be the start of famine, war, pestilence and the back-stabbing murderous types.
There is too much thinking involved, that is the reason for the hellfire which will follow.
It's well known that people who think too much can turn into murderers, schizophrenics or manic depressives, it's a harsh fact that this bokononism is evil, humanity is all wrong and needs to be destroyed, it is out to get us, they want us to think and do.. all the while we're all getting diseases from genetically mutated food and mad cows.

this religion may look good on paper, but in real life will always be corrupted by money, conflicting views, biases, baaad people or bad management.

Got the Bob worried, eh? two replies?

well, the religion just got invented for the sake of the novel, and it is worked in really well to the story, and in the novel the only reason for the religion is to give the people of this remote island republic something to believe in.

However i think a lot of the stuff makes sense, and since i am an integrational polytheist and make my own religious policy, i have decided that even fictitious religions (perhaps there are more out there than people think?) have got meaning and purpose.

I also think that Bobbism (?) has meaning and purpose even though i am reliably informed that the Bobs want to destroy me.  :D

i don't have anything! or do i in fact have everything? does it actually matter what i have?

this is the thing about agreeing (potentially) with every religion... it's unlikely i will ever make up my actual mind about anything.

I love the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, old british comedy is the best.
