waste of time and money

all so that they can have a better picture on their tv

why?

so that if I ever have to see buffy or some shit like that, I can see a "super clear image" with "high quality sound"

what's wrong with what we've got?

what's wrong with NTSC?



See? That's allright. I mean, look at where we've come from to get this medium quality.

In the 1980s, people brought TV shows in with rabbit ears



By the early 1990s, everybody got cable or satellite and to enjoy their better picture, they got projection TVs



amazing, isn't it? and it's so damn big so everybody can see it as long as they sit right in front of it

now we've got HDTV... let's look at this. high clarity picture and great sound



wow, dude!! look! that's beautiful! I love the HDTV aspect, too, all stretched like that, it's so realistic. and the sound! I never thought these shitty ass sitcoms could sound so real!

Heh. Had I an HDTV, I could probably compare. The TVs are something like a thousand dollars now, aren't they? And the service is only on selectively and not on the TV I actually watch.. more a waste of money than a waste of time.

Maddox could spell and put out a better argument, theres not many places in australia where you dont get HDTV, I dont have one.

The quality on DVD's kicks ass, and there susposed to be the same. But I usually only watch the simpsons so I never bothered with it.

We have PAL32 here in Europe. We have a little button on our VCR from which you can switch between NTSC and PAL32. PAL32 is much better.

Umm..not quite the same. DVD is compressed MPEG-2 video at a 720x480 resolution. HDTV resolution is three times as large.

hell 35mm film is about 400 pixels wide in reality. and runs at 24p

and xeen got it spot on, dvd is only 480p (progressive scan)

however interlaced video sucks ass.

and the HDTV standard (1080i) is INTERLACED!!!!!

pointer:
interlaced is 60 half-frames per second
e.g.

frame 1:...........frame 2:

those are how the scan lines in a interlaced picture are layed out.
becuase the are not the same moment in time there is a noticeable horizontal tearing in the image whenever something moves on-screen

Progressive scanning is where the picture tube draws 30 whole frames per second.


DVD's are not HDTV. HDTV is currently only broadcasted over the air. vhs will not work with HDTV, and DVR's won't either, you will have to but a new DVR that takes HDTV and probably will accept the "broadcast flag" so if it is a popular show, you can't record it if you won't be able to see it when it is on.

Not really true. You can always record it in crappy VHS format if you use a converter. However I think HDTV is also capable of carrying macrovision with it, so that might stop you.

Have A 57" 16:9 aspect HDTV.
5 disk  progressive/interlaced DVD player
5.1 sound system.
and a popcorn maker.
Formula 1 looks great.
i very rarely go out to the movies. no lines, no screaming kids, no talking, and if the phone rings(or something else needs to be done) i wont miss a thing.

D-VHS is out

HD-DVD is soon to be out (maybe?)

I find that normal TV's are almost impossible to watch now.  My syster has a 40" something SDTV with normal 4:3 aspect . The quality of the picture is atrocious!
Even while watching a SD program on mine, the picture quality is/was well worth the expense.

Here are a few tips:

Lines: go when there are almost no people around. Monday or tuesday mornings are perfect.
Kids: Don't go to movies like Finding Nemo and that problem is solved too  
Talking: See Lines. As an extra, try to hook up with a girl who's a ninja/jiu-jitsu expert.
Phone rings: Turn yours off. For others, see Talking.

Oh yeah, they also think it's really important for HDTV to have DRM to be accepted by the American people.

Just another example of how our rights are being sold to the big media monopolies.

Remember that there is no way though that anyone can force us to get HDTV. All the FCC wants is to completely change the signals to HighDef. But that doesn't mean we have to get HDTVs. To recieve those HighDef signals you always need a converter/cable box/satellite box attached to the tv. And all of those always have analog-out for regular tvs. It would be political suicide for them to actually "force" everyone to buy HDTVs.

I wonder though, does the 2007 switch mean we won't able to use metal antennas/hangers to get local airwaves anymore?

Dude, that is totally not the point.  The point is that the bandwidth belongs to me.  Well, us, every one of us.  Yeah, HDTV signals are going to be blasted through the sky!  Some of it gets used for radio, some for TV, some for cell phones, some for garage door openers.  With the space that HDTV is going to take up, you could fit like 100 radio stations, vastly increasing the variety and competition of your local radio market (which sucks royal ass in my area).  Or even cooler - wireless internet everywhere.  Surf the net while you're on a bus.  There's a lot of really great stuff that could be done with the bandwidth.  But it's not going to be done because some asshat has decided that HDTV is the future.  The FCC is wrong.  I want my taxes back.
