Denial of Service
« on: 15 February 2003, 22:07 »
Ok, so after a long period of hesitation, I picked up my shiny new password after I forgot it, and logged in to these forums. It still feels the same, and I still love it. It's good to be back.

So ... how are you guys? All right?

neway, my band and I jumped into a studio and did some recording for our EP, and we already got two songs. So please check them out at

http://home.wanadoo.nl/daniwuck/muziek.html

The site is in Dutch, but you should be able to download them OGG's, use the http link, and say 'save link as'. (the only way to download from that (my) server is by http, which tries to open a binary OGG as a text file. Result: the same as typing 'cat /dev/urandom' into your console.)

Before you listen:
The songs still aren't final, and I definately need to record Mad About Her again. And wasap isn't at all serious, see it as good fun. It is, trust me  ;)

Very good, I like it

Wasap is really hard to understand though... if you patented the lyrics, put them online, I really would like to know what the song is about

You think it's really good? Wow.

I haven't patented the lyrics, neither has Jonathan, (the one who 'sings' it: the one who came up with the lyrics) but I'm sure he doesn't mind me  writing it down:

(please wait, launching XMMS ... )

Wouldn't that mean playing them will be the same as typing 'cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp'?

I'll try and listen to them later. Right now I'm busy... well no, just lazy (being awake @ 2:50 AM and stuff).

Welcome back and stuff. Wasn't I supposed to mail you a few weeks back?

Refalm: you can't patent lyrics. You can copyright them - but he already covered that by writing and playing the music   . Actually maybe his friend did... Oh, the joy that is the legal system.

Uhm ... no, because your browser will open that binary file as text, you will get the same in your browser as if you would watch the output of 'cat /dev/urandom' on your screen. Excuse my vagueness.

Example: open this link in a new tab/window

http://home.wanadoo.nl/daniwuck/music/Denial_Of_Service-Mad_About_Her.ogg

I'm gonna try 'cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp' as soon as I get home, sounds like good fun!

Yesh it's good to be back, and maybe Refalm meant something else with 'patenting lyrics'?

It would be the same as cat /path/to/file/file.ogg actually
OK, the file will be mangled and humanly unreadable, but I sure hope it's not /dev/urandom.

Refalm probably ment copyright.

Yes, if you want to be really precise (like I know you are  :D ) that is correct.

So .. what's so bad about /dev/urandom? Has it got any kind of 'evil' output?

No - but it sucks to listen to it for more than 1 minute. We were still talking about the song

/dev/urandom is used for real stuff, X11. And even though you'd probably won't see anything different, there is a chance that could cause problems.
