RoadRunner giving me trouble

Well. I signed up for road runner high speed internet about a month and a half ago, and have had no problems until recently. Every once in a while my connection just stops on its own and doesnt start up again until I reset the cable modem. This is really annoying since I run a webserver and am often away from home and need to ssh into my machine. I tried switching cable modems, but the problem still occurs. Im just wondering if anyone else has had these problems and what they did to remedy them.

if roadrunner uses a DHCP server try setting up your network connection with a static IP (I had the same problem with my cable provider and this helped)

this is not a very good option if they assign new IP's on a regular basis though (which in my case is like once every year or two, so for me it doesn't matter much)

If your IP address keeps changing, you should use a dynamic DNS service like http://www.cjb.net/

Well, I run a dns server off of my machine for my domain name for the website. Cjb's service just wont cut it for what im doing, since I have both a domain name and a static ip address.

Preacher. You just can't run a reliable (and fast) web server off of DSL or cable. My partner has DSL with 5 static addresses and his DSL modem used to lock up about once a week.  It's not quite as bad now, maybe once a month.  

My cable has been pretty reliable but on both cable and DSL your web site will only serve pages to people on the internet at whatever your upload speed is (usually much lower than your download speed). And the latency is usually quite a bit higher, and the cable/DSL providers put no priority on making sure your modem is up and working with any kind of high availability.

We now have a Sprint T1 (actually in K.C. where you are) and a few servers that we run our side business off of. The T1 is MANY times better than cable or DSL. However, at $900/mo it may not be cost effective for what you are doing. Having said that, if you wanted to stick your server on the same T1 we have ours on I can get you hooked up with someone in K.C. and it may be affordable depending on your bandwidth needs.  If you are interested shoot me a private message.

And we also run backup web servers off our cable/DSL modems along with DNS servers and I have written some "heartbeat" scripts to play DNS tricks so if the T1 does happen to go down DNS will point at the backup servers for 100% availability. When the T1 connection comes back up DNS adjusts accordingly.

my ISP claims that my upload speed is 33% faster than my download speed. 3M/s ul versus 2M/s dl

That would be very unusual indeed. Have you done any speed tests? Does your provider have an FTP server on their network that you can test it? FTP a file up to the server and compare the times with when you FTP one down. It's better if it is a server on your providers network for a good speed check.

Road runner gives me about 50k/sec uploads, which is more than enough for my site which only gets about 300 hits a day. I also truly enjoy having the total control that comes from running my own server. Since I made this post, oddly enough I have recieved no problems from road runner. Thanks for the replies.

I have Road Runner and have the same problem. It happens all the time. When you call they just tell you to shut it down and reboot.
