« on: 16 December 2001, 02:06 »
Hello
i was wondering, what do u people think about two chip developers (AMD $intel) which is better? Faster? Cheaper?, putting those things together, which is the best?

i think AMD is the best compared to the price.
what do u ppl think?

AMD.  Go with an Athlon if you can; it's a lot faster than Intel.

Well, that's what I've heard anyway.

I would have to agree with Webmaster (even though I know he is partial to PPC etc).  I think you get more bang for your buck with an AMD Athalon.  I've been running a 1600 for a couple of months now and I've thrown a heck of a lot at it and it doesn't break a sweat. Just pack lots of fast memory around it and you'll be very happy.

Intel is pretty much a rip off, sure.. they get the job done, and they do a great job at it, but why not spend less for an AMD, and get the job done even faster?

yeah - AMD all the way...

beats intel hands down..
dont go for Duron, its made to match the celeron.. make sure you pick Athlon (T-Bird) or XP/MP .. much better..

I used to run a Duron (right up until a friend managed to fry my Socket A board).

I didn't really notice any problems with the Duron; I even put it to the test with some heavy-duty 3D games such as Descent3, and it performed quite nicely (and with only PC100 Ram and an outdated video card, to boot).

I would recommend an Athlon, but a Duron is a nice cheap alternative that also overclocks quite nicely.
I can't get over you until you get out from under him.

Not only is it really stinking fast, But it does
everything faster that a dual 1.7 Ghz Xeon. hehe.
Really now, Think "WinTel". The 760MP chipset it
the most stable motherboard, cpu combo I've ever
used.

I have a question, would an AMD fit into a motherboard built for PIII or Celerons? (sorry, I don't know a lot about motherboards/processors and therefore don't know precisely what to look for)

Generally not, in fact generally you can't use two different AMD architectures on the same board, or two different Intel architectures on the same board.  You need to go to the manufacturers web site and find your board and see what processors that particular board supports, and if the clock speeds are different you'll likely have to at least change the jumpers on the board to match the CPU.  Usually if you upgrade you will want to change the CPU, Motherboard, and memory all at the same time. http://www.tomshardware.com/ has a lot of CPU/Motherboard info.

o.O
sounds like a lot of trouble to me, I think I'll just stick with my humble little 900 MHz Celeron *scuttles away*

slot type boards are better that socket type partially because of the chip layout itself

first   the stand-up slot type gets better airflow around the chip and through the heatsink than a socket type because you cant get air to the back of the chip in a socket

second   the standup slot type fans generally face into the airflow inside the case unlike socket type which trys to pull air cross-flow from the main air flow generally a difference of 5 to 10 mhz

amd athlon  1750 paired
fic m11 mainboard
1536 meg pny ddr ram
quantum fireball III 10000rpm  160 gig hd

beat that

I've never owned an AMD but isin't there a problem with cooling with them?
I'm not trying to bash them or start anything. I'm just wondering.
