Did you watch that Moulin Rouge movie? I don't know about you but I just plain didn't get it. Eveyone raved about it. I suffered through half of it before I decided it wasn't going to get any better. What am I missing? Caddyshack, now *that's* a movie!

I love Moulin Rouge for the music, the characters, the story, and the filmmaking style. I can't resist the sight gags, graphics, the performances, it's all so great, IMHO.

But, it's a flick that you either love or hate.

As for trying to "get" it... please don't. Baz Luhrmann called the style "Comedy Of The Heart". It's absurd, pointless comedy based on sight gags and simple things like the sound effects and cinematography. In Moulin Rouge, the movie itself is a character. Don't try to get it, just sit back, relax, laugh, and enjoy.

Laugh? Maybe that was my problem. I didn't know it was supposed to be funny. I don't recall laughing once. You must be right on the love it or hate it bit. I would say I wasted $5 on a movie rental.

i really enjoyed moulin rouge, but then we went to see it at the pictures. i am surprised it has been so successful actually, as things which are not easily classifiable often are not liked by many people, or are misclassified by the media and people's expectations are let down.

Well I can't say that I liked Moulin Rouge nor that I hated it. I would stand somewhere in the middle. The movie was absurd, almost paranoid, that's for sure but then again that was the whole point. In a few words Baz Luhrman tried to reproduce the Bohemian frenzy in early 20th century Paris. He managed to do that succesfully up to a point but then started being superfluous and a bit boring.
