Politicians in general - I hate them. PNAC is evil, any orginization of that type, with those set of ideals is very dangerous.

Wildfires are a natural occurance. If you cut down more trees the forest will get hotter and there will be more fires - trees cool down the forest. You could maybe cut all oldgrowth and reduce the chance of fire some.
Selective logging is the only way to go, in my opinion.

And to reply to Jimmy: any President (or anyone) that starts a war should be shot. Or maybe blown up with big guns shooting big bombs.

controlled burning to clear away the undergrowth is what is needed. its the undergrowth that fuels the fires. the trees, especially old growth dont burn to easily on there own but add the fuel of a few feet of twiggs and brush and then the fires get hot enough to ignight the whole tree. i know these things because my sister works for the forest service in oregon, my grandfather was a forest fire fighter in california, my good friend is in pyrotechnics and another friend is a pyromaniac (now on his 2nd year of a 12 year sentence).

My dads in the CFA and it's not normal trees that are the problem - they burn hot but it takes a fair bit to set them off.  It's fucking pine plantations that you want to stay away from...
Yesterday it worked
Today it is not working

Most undergrowth occurs where it's been logged or burned - that's one reason why I said what I did. Let me go check ... (tromp-tromp-tromp), pretty much just ferns under those trees. And then I just assume that old growth would burn better....
