Need a "virus" or worm
« on: 24 March 2002, 21:19 »
It will be one that spreads on it's own but asks users if they want it installed.  It could just travel through email clients and ask new users if they want it.  All it does is eliminate the .dat and etc... that was integrated into MS to spy on users and stop new ones from being produced.  Being entirely in binary would also be good.

It will probably take a fairly competant programer, but I dunno.  all I can do is Visual Basic so it might be easy.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the DAT files are not for spying. They are your Internet Explorer history and cache. If you simply delete the DAT files, they'll just get recreated the next time you run Internet Explorer.

They could potentially be used for spying.

Even if they are not, there is no reason for IE to store that much info and attempt to keep it out of the users reach. Furthermore it is a waste of HD space, and with XP and it's phone home crap, I wouldent trust M$ as far as I could throw them when it comes to privacy.

Up until last November, I never used anything other than Win 95. When I heard about those .dat files, I checked this out and couldn't believe it: those things had stored up over five years' worth of Internet history! Those fuckers had grown to almost 50MB, and it took a good 12 minutes to delete the damn things. Didn't anyone at M$ ever consider an auto-expire feature(!) There really is no excuse for such piss-poor programming.

A good solution would be to simply stop using the Internut Exploiter (the slowest browser I've ever used). Get Netscape, Opera, or Mozilla, or anything else. You won't do any worse.

on my winME side, the first thing i do after any (periodically necessary) reinstalls is uninstall IExplore using IEradicator (which works fine) and install Opera instead. To avoid any problems, i make a copy of "Opera.exe", call it "IExplore, exe" and put it in my C:/Progra~1/Opera directory, then if a pernickety dialogue box cries out that it needs to know the location of IExplore.exe, i can point it in exactly the right direction, works like a charm. Opera saves all it's "hidden files" data in one file, in plain site, you can safely set it up to be deleted every time windows exits, instructions are elsewhere in these forums.

On the subjext of that virus, i would not run it if i received it, i would not believe it was beneficial. it will not catch on that one, i guarantee it.
